House in Holderness, NH
0 miles from Squam Lake
The original family dating back to before 1914 still owns this charming, house, guest cottage, and screened in sitting porch right on Squam Lake. You’ll want to return year after year (as many of our guests do) to this peaceful, woodland, waterfront, get-away with spectacular views of Squam Lake and unparalleled privacy. The focal point of this single-level, “L” shaped house is a warm and comfortable living room with fireplace for which firewood is furnished. For bedrooms, there is a master bedroom with a queen bed and single bed; a back bedroom with two queen beds, and a second small back bedroom with two single beds. Both bathrooms are in the house. Steps away from the house, right next to the shore is the guest cottage with two small rooms each containing a double bed and a single bed. You will enjoy a screened in lakeside sitting porch, screened in porch off cabin, deck, and dock. The water is clean and great for fishing, swimming and boating. We furnish pillows and blankets, and require that you bring your own linens and towels. Laundry in basement. Dock can accommodate boats. Property Description: We are nestled in a cove with a view of Great Island. The edge of the shore is shallow and sandy – a perfect way for new swimmers and young children to enjoy the Lake. You can canoe about 1.5 miles to Heron Cove in Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest. It offers several beaches and about 4 miles of hiking trails perfect for adults and children to enjoy. The Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest is also accessible by car - a 5 minute drive. Bowman and Moon Islands are a 1 mile paddle and have small beaches. Adults need a NH fishing license to fish in the lake. There are many restaurants in Holderness and in Meredith, and stores in Holderness, Meredith and Center Harbor. Lake Description: Squam is where the movie 'On Golden Pond' starring Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda and Katherine Hepburn was filmed. Our house is a short kayak or canoe paddle from the island where the movie was filmed. The lake is quite beautiful and interesting to explore. If you are motor boating, watch out for the rocks - they are well marked, but plentiful. A vessel powered by 25 horsepower or more does require the operator to have a Safe Boater Education Certificate. You can launch larger boats across the street from the Science Center in Holderness, smaller boats from a launch on the property, and canoes and very small boats can be rolled off our dock. The best view of the whole lake is from the top of Rattlesnake Mountain which is 25 minute drive. Other Attractions: There are lots of mountains in the area which are great to climb or ski within a short drive (Waterville Valley ~30 miles). There are easy hikes such as Rattlesnake, and challenging ones like Mt. Washington. Rattlesnake has a spectacular view of Squam Lake, and takes the average adult 30 minutes to climb and offers the best view for the effort. Other favorites are: the Welsh-Dicky Loop Trail; Mount Morgan and Mount Percival which are a bit more difficult. Kids love the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness which features animal and educational exhibits. Families will also enjoy the Meredith Children’s Museum which has a pretend play store, giant bubble maker, play castle, and more. If you need pampering, a thirty mile drive takes you to Lincoln, New Hampshire to the Mountain Club on Loon which features a full service spa and health club with pool, jacuzzi and steam room – day passes are available. If yoga calls you, North Sandwich (15 miles) offers the Dragonfly Yoga Barn.

House (3000 sq. ft.) in Sandwich, NH

Plan now for spring, summer, and fall! A unique, secluded hillside property with dramatic views and a private beach on Squam Lake. The house, built by noted Boston architect Charles R. Myer and Partners, is a modern version of a classic Squam Lake house. A row of windows allows for a striking view across Squam Lake from both living room and dining room. The airy, quite expansive screen porch with the same amazing view is large enough for enjoying meals. An adjacent deck leads via stairs, down to a second carport. The house is situated in open woods, about 1,000 feet up a private drive that twists and turns its way up Red Hill. Outside are two grassy areas with furniture and a propane-fueled BBQ. A private trail, about 100 yards long, connects the house with the Squam Lakes Association’s Red Hill trail system, up to the fire tower on the summit of Red Hill (right), or Eagle Cliff (left). These two day-hikes are among the most dramatic in the region, with expansive views of the Lakes Region and the Southern White Mountains. Inside, the kitchen space opens onto the dining room and a large, open-concept great room with two-story open ceiling. There is one sofa and plenty of comfortable chairs. The great room fireplace has a chimney that runs two stories through the center of the house. The first-floor, private master bedroom downstairs has a full, separate bathroom, washer and dryer area, and a TV room with a convertible sofa and air conditioner. Upstairs includes a small desk nook, a bedroom with two twin beds, a bedroom with a full-sized bed, a full bathroom, and a cozy home office space with two camp-sized (twin) beds. Higher still, accessible by a unique ladder system, is a loft space with four twin-sized beds suitable for children. The private sandy beach is one of a very few on Squam Lake. It’s perfect for all generations—even the youngest of kids. The beach is located across the road from the driveway. A tall wooden fence provides privacy for beach users. Off-road parking is available for three vehicles, with additional parking along the private driveway. The sandy beach includes a dock, several kayaks with paddles and personal flotation devices, and a storage shed with a variety of masks, snorkels, and flippers. About 75 feet out from the beach is a private raft, a great spot from which to take in the views from the lake. Squam Lake is known for its fantastic bass, trout, and landlocked salmon fishing. (Sorry, the water is not deep enough for a motorboat at the dock, nor is there a mooring.) This is a rare Squam Lake property that would make for a memorable holiday for a multi-generational family or several couples. (The first floor is designed to be accessible for someone using a walker.) The property, home, and beach are one of a kind, and ideal for a family seeking a special, secluded get-away with all the modern amenities. Rentals are for Sunday to Saturday, with a six-night minimum during July and August. Check-in time is 4:00 p.m. Sunday, check-out time is 11:00 a.m. Saturday. The property manager lives a few miles away and usually coordinates with the guest to greet them upon arrival and orient them to their new surroundings. A pdf file will be sent once the rental process is complete. It will provide the guest with a complete orientation for the property, the surrounding area, and community. A printed version will be available once you arrive.

Located on one of Squam Lake’s rare private peninsulas, Camp Finisterre offers the greatest luxury of all: simple living in a spectacular setting. This former fishing camp-turned-family getaway is a throwback to an unplugged era. From the moment you leave your car behind and begin the short walk down the blueberry-lined path (your first glimpse of Finisterre’s 2,000 feet of shoreline), you will feel like you have arrived back at summer camp. Just as then, all you’ll need is your swimsuit and a good book. Finisterre was constructed on this “end of the earth” promontory in the early 20th century. Set on an acre of land surrounded on nearly all sides by water, the camp hosted anglers, including President Cleveland, who flocked to its clear green waters, sandy-bottomed coves, and rocky shoals. It was converted to a family retreat that was purchased in 1957 by the Brown family who in the ensuing decades have welcomed family, friends, and, more recently, renters to its peaceful embrace. From the beginning, Finisterre has been a special place for all ages to gather. The spacious, shingled house (3,900 square feet including its wide, covered porches) have been renovated and yet have maintained their vintage charm, with bead board siding, wood framed windows, indoor/outdoor living, and a mix of modest New England furnishings. It is wonderfully comfortable, though nothing here is precious, save kinship and nature. Simply put, the camp invites relaxing. Free of modern life’s distractions, your biggest decision may be whether to take a dip in the lake or a nap on the porch. Come sunset, you can gather for a sun downer on the west-facing dock, convene for supper in the large, eat-in kitchen, and move your party to the fire ring at the end of the point for s’mores. Finally, retire to one of the camp’s airy bedrooms where you will fall asleep to the calls of loons and the lapping of waves. Your assignment for the next day? Rinse and repeat. To get a sense of just how private your escape will be, check out the aerial photo below. Our camp is the entire peninsula on the right. You're close to everything (including the charming town of Holderness), and yet far away from it all. • On small cove shared with just one other family • Directly across from Squam Lakes Association where you can rent sailboats, kayaks, and more • 2 miles from Holderness • 6 miles from Ashland • 10 miles from Meredith

The original family still owns this summer home on Squam Lake, built in 1914. The house might best be described as a grand 'camp,' with pine walls and ceilings, and hardwood floors -- built by and for the wealthy. It is one of three summer homes on a 35-acre estate, covering nearly a half-mile of shoreline surrounding a lovely point in Squam Lake. (Squam Lake's water has remained so pure that you can drink it.) This private setting, among the century-old forest of 'Pine Needle Point,' is perfect for family gatherings and reunions. In addition to the six bedrooms (which sleep 12 easily and comfortably) -- all with views of the lake, there are three sleeping porches (two overlook the lake), with platform beds for six additional guests. We furnish pillows and blankets, but request that you bring your own linens and towels. Downstairs, a large living room centers around a large fieldstone fireplace, for which firewood is furnished. The room also has a baby grand piano and a pump organ. An office nook includes a desk, library, stereo system, and a variety of games and puzzles for all ages. The large, eat-in kitchen is fully stocked with kitchen utensils, china, flatware and glassware. Two sinks and prep areas facilitate meal preparation, and promote a social atmosphere. Two additional refrigerators, plus a washer, dryer, and laundry sink, are in the adjoining utility room. The dining room seats 12 comfortably around a large oak table. Hear the loons by lowering the sliding windows into their casements. Long-used maps of the nearby White Mountains adorn one wall. The screened sitting porch off the living room provides an idyllic location in which to enjoy a beverage of choice with friends or family, to have lunch, or just to read, have a quiet afternoon nap, or enjoy the unbelievable lake views. Or stroll down to the gazebo on the point to enjoy the lake in an outdoors setting. And feel free to enjoy a picnic or an evening campfire at the fire pit near the gazebo. It's only a short distance (about 100 feet) from the main house down to the dock, which is 12 feet wide by 45 feet long -- perfect for sitting, sunning, swimming, or securing watercraft (but please -- no jet skis or boats with engines exceeding 25 hp). A swim float is anchored about 75 yards off the dock for your enjoyment. Squam Lake retains its non-commercial, peaceful charm from many years ago, and is a perfect place to swim, fish, sail (our favorite), canoe, and kayak. The Squam Lakes Association, just a mile or two down the lake towards Holderness, rents sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and small electric-motored boats for periods from a half-day up to a week. Squam Lake has numerous coves and islands to see and explore. And Rattlesnake Mountain, seen just behind and slightly to the left of the fisherman in the bottom left photo, affords spectacular views from its rocky ledges (the aerial view of Squam Lake at the top of this site was taken atop Rattlesnake) for remarkably little effort -- a splendid first mountain for children, or an extraordinary place to be inspired by a full moon reflected on the lake. 'On Golden Pond' was filmed a short distance from our camp. If anything, the lake is more beautiful than depicted in that film; but see the movie again to recapture the lake's ambiance. While normal full rental occupancy in the house is 12, we will discuss expanding that number for an additional charge, to meet your family's requirements. A week at the J Bowden Camp on Squam Lake will create many wonderful memories that will last a lifetime -- and bring you back for more. Keywords: house

Camp Squog is a 100+ year old classic fishing camp on Squam Lake's Dog Cove across from Mouse Island. Center Harbor is the nearest town by car, about a 10-minute drive away. By water, Holderness is about a 15-minute motorboat ride and is the location of Squam Boats, the source for gas and for renting everything from kayaks to Boston Whalers to large boats for water-skiing. The mail-boat scene in the movie "On Golden Pond" was filmed at the dock, an earlier version of the current large T-shaped dock that extends into the lake. The dock is an ideal spot for your motorboat, for launching kayaks and sailboats, swimming or a place to lounge and enjoy a sun-filled day or starry-filled night. Some refer to the camp as the "De Beers Cottage" because some years ago a commercial for De Beers diamonds was shot on the dock and front steps. The house is two stories. The downstairs is a large open space including a living room with wood-burning fireplace and dining area with large oak table that seats 14. Adjacent is a fully equipped modern kitchen and a half bath. There are seven bedrooms upstairs and a full bath with tub and shower. On the lake side, the house is encircled by a large porch outfitted with traditional rocking chairs. It is the perfect spot for reading, afternoon cocktails or just relaxing. The perfect spot for a relaxing vacation at the lake.

Spend your 2020 vacation on picturesque Squam Lake, the site of the movie 'On Golden Pond'. In fact, the movie's producer, Bruce Gilbert, spent the summer with his family in this beautiful knotty pine cottage on the lake while the movie was being filmed. Enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, water-skiing from the private dock and hear the loons calling at night and in the early morning. Very private wood road location, yet conveniently located a short drive from Holderness shopping and marinas. Easy day trips to a wide variety of sights, including The Science and Wildlife Center in Holderness, the outlet stores in North Conway, the Mt. Washington Auto Road, or even the Maine coast for lunch and a visit to the L.L. Bean store. Enjoy the numerous nearby mountain trails. Explore Squam Lake's many hidden coves and indulge yourself in the unforgettable sights of this unspoiled, clear-water, mountain-region lake from a bygone era. Perfect for Summer lake activities or Fall Foliage viewing! Choice dates still available - call or email now! Lake Activities: Private 70-foot dock can accommodate two or more boats. Bring your own boat (boat launch ramp is less than a mile away) or rentals are available from 3 nearby marinas. Picnic on one of the many public access islands on the lake. Enjoy water-skiing, tubing, and wake boarding.....canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities. 7-mile-long lake features many secluded fishing areas away from swimmers and skiers. Tours by boat of the 'On Golden Pond' movie sites on the lake are available in nearby Holderness -- visit 'Purgatory Cove' where Henry Fonda clung to the rocks waiting for Katherine Hepburn to dive in and rescue him. Later you can dine at Walter's Basin, the Holderness restaurant named for the movie's biggest lake trout catch. Attend Sunday-morning (non-denom) services on Church Island in a stunning outdoor setting (Memorial Day thru Labor Day). Explore a wide variety of lake features: The Narrows, jump off The Rock in Rattlesnake Cove, nesting Bald Eagles (June/early July) on Little Loon Island, Dog Cove and, of course, the loons of Squam. Mountains: Hike the many nearby mountain trails of Mts. Morgan and Percival, East and West Rattlesnake (an easy climb with a glorious view of the entire lake) and Mt. Chocorua. Further north you can find the Presidential Range of the White Mountains including famous Tuckerman's Ravine and Mt Washington, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi, with its Auto Road or Cog Railway options for those who don't want to hike it on foot but want to enjoy the views from the top. Many more mountain climbs of varying difficulty are within a short drive. Local Attractions: Some of the many local attractions of the area include The Science and Wildlife Center in Holderness, featuring a wide array of rescued animals from the local area plus many educational activities. The Polar Caves are just a short drive away in West Plymouth and The Cannon Mountain Gondolas are just a bit further north in Franconia. Many other natural wonders can be found in the Franconia Notch area including The Flume, The Gorge, The Basin, Indian Head Mountain and outstanding mountain views. And don't miss the new 'Old Man of the Mountain' Memorial attraction, which re-creates that spectacular iconic natural rock formation.

Owner requests to talk to with future travelers before rental agreement is settled. Please take excellent care of this home, property, clear beautiful Lake The four-bedroom and three full bath with showers, lakefront home on Squam Lake is a large and gracious two-story cabin, built in 1937 in warm camp style. If you've seen the classic movie 'On Golden Pond', you will recognize beautiful Squam Lake. This camp has all the charm of Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn's cabin; and it's bigger -- with all the comforts of modern family living. The shoreline has a soft, sandy area that's excellent for swimming or you can enjoy star-gazing in the quiet cove. There's a roomy dock and swim float anchored offshore. The generous setting is perfect for family times and restful rejuvenation. Happy sounds of family gatherings will resound from the natural pine walls, ceilings, and hardwood floors. At the center of the big living room there is comfortable seating around the brick fireplace. Everyone loves to gather here. Built-in storage bins have games and craft supplies. The recently added great room, with its native American decor and cathedral ceiling, can function as a family room, den, an office, or a guest or extended family space. The desk area looks out to pines, the dock, Squam Lake, and islands. Adjacent to the great room is a large first floor bath with shower. Firewood is stacked in neat piles next to the woodshed. Once the fire is crackling, the grand oak dining table (made from the property's own fallen timber during the hurricane of '38) is THE hub for family dinners and games. In the renovated kitchen, two sinks and two refrigerators make meal preparation fun. There's plenty of room for the hustle and bustle, while snacking and talking. The kitchen is fully stocked with kitchen utensils and multiple sets of china (including some in a Squam Lake loon motif) and plenty of glassware. In addition to the four full bedrooms and two baths on the second floor (two queen and one twin bed room look out to the lake, and another twin room looks out to the pines), there are other sleeping options throughout the home. A couch on the screened-in porch is a moon-watcher's joy. For the kids, a sleeping loft for three looks over two queen pull-outs in the great room/den. Another single pull-out provides for more sleeping in the den. You can fall asleep to sound of the loons on Squam Lake. We provide all linens, pillows, blankets, and towels. A laundry room is adjacent to the downstairs bathroom, with a washer, dryer, and storage for beach towels. Enjoy looking out from your bedroom at the water lapping against the shore. Enjoy settling down in Adirondack chairs on the dock -- or in the rocking chair on the screened-in porch. Put your feet up on the large outdoor deck, which is great for a buffet lunch. Look out to Squam Lake and islands -- or down to the dock, to watch the kids playing. Then look up to the tall white pines that are frequented by hummingbirds. Listen to the loons under a full moon. In the morning, take a canoe ride and watch the sunrise over shimmering Squam Lake. Daytime is for sunning on our extra large dock and swimming in the clear waters or wading at our the sunny sandy shoreline. Take a boat ride or go fishing -- and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of jewel-like Squam Lake. Next, curl up with a book on the floating raft. A five-minute drive down the road to the trail for Rattlesnake Mountain provides a glorious view and moderate hike. At sunset, get out on the lake and see the loons and the incredible colors. A wooden walkway from the main house takes you mere steps away to the L-shaped expansive floating dock. Five boats included. The five boats are: A small fishing motorboat, two canoes, one sunfish style sailboat, and a kayak. A raft is anchored about 50 yards off the dock, and is great for swimming and diving. Or it's a haven of floating tranquility -- to get away from it all (or THEM all!) for few minutes of lake side day dreaming. This cabin is available from May - Mid October. Available rental dates for summer and fall are provided right after Thanksgiving of the year prior.
